Villa Patrizia was founded in the late 1960's by the intuition of Romeo Bruni, a carpenter with a passion for winemaking, who with his wife Maria decided to leave a comfortable job and come back to the countryside. They settled in Maremma, betting everything on an interesting area, albeit one more linked with the world of sheep-farming, not wine growing. The first years are of experimentation and the company mainly produces wine in bulk, because at that time in Maremma people thought that "the good wine was not in bottle" (Romeo’s own words!). In the mid-'80s, the company starts to put the good wine in bottle: the customers are enthusiastic and Romeo personally delivers "vans" of wine with his inseparable Ford Transit.
In the early 1990s two children of Romeo and Maria, Maurizio and Patrizia start to work in the company and the family decides to invest in the DOC (DOCG by 2007) Morellino di Scansano, buying 4 hectares of vineyards in the locality of Piandorneta. In recent years the company has collaborated with the prestigious enologist Fabrizio Ciufoli, and in 2007 converted their vineyards and olive groves to organic agricultural practice. Finally, in 2009 the newest entry to the family business is Romeo’s grandson Alessio, an agronomist graduate schooled in Florence and now the winemaker for the estate. Today, after 40 years, the bet can be said largely won. The family’s estates under vine now total 25 hectares, located in Roccalbegna and Piandorneta. Villa Patrizia works only with its own estate grapes and produces about 65,000 bottles annually, divided between Morellino, IGT Toscana (Bianco, Rosato, Rosso) and Montecucco. The company also produces a small amount of organic olive oil from their estates.
Romeo Bruni and his family give birth to genuine products in line with the characteristics of an area which can exalt flavors and fragrances, and where the company fits in perfect harmony with the unspoiled natural surroundings. Villa Patrizia adopted organic farming methods, avoiding use of systemic pesticides and chemical fertilizers, in an ongoing effort to prevent diseases and pests through good agricultural practice, and using only products containing sulfur and copper or derived from biological industry. All vinification is conducted spontaneously, using native yeasts of the grape, reducing the impact of chemical production while preserving the characteristic of the grapes.
