Francois Schmitt

Originally founded in 1697, François Schmitt took over the family farm in the 1970’s. At that time the farm consisted of 3 hectares of vineyards and a small winery in the center of the village Orschwihr in Alsace.

François undertook several land acquisitions including prominent vineyards on the slopes of Cru du Bollenberg and Grand Cru Pfingstberg. The plots of the Domaine, now measuring 12 hectares, are grouped around the village, and the family practices sustainable viticulture in harmony with the terroirs, harvesting the grapes at their optimum maturity. The Grand Cru has been under organic farming practices since 2005.

With the expansion of the vineyards came expansion of the winery as well. In 1984, François constructed a new winery at the entrance of the village, adding more vats in 1995 and again in 2004.

Today François is joined by his son Frédéric, who has acquired rich training in viticulture and oenology throughout France, including the regions of Burgundy, Sauternes and the Loire Valley.

With François and Frédéric, the passion of producing great wines continues another generation, continuing the family tradition.
